A message from fellow 'Maestegi' Colin Richards asking if I fancied a jaunt up to Garreg Lwyd, Munydd Ddu yesterday morning was answered with a massive positive reply.
Colin is unquestionably the Dotterel expert in South Wales and visits this hotspot regularly in spring and autumn checking on passage birds, his records go back some twenty five years, that's a lot of data !!
With Colin at the wheel we rocked up at the car park below the mountain at about 10.15am, my fitness level after my radiotherapy for my PC isn't quite what it should be but I was really pleased with myself on getting to the limestone plateau at the summit after a bit of a 'lung buster'.
Colin soon spotted a single male Dotterel and though a little wary of our presence at first it quickly became quite confiding and we both 'filled our boots' coming away with some really pleasing shots.....
We spent some further time looking for more birds but on this occasion were out of luck and after a spot of well earned lunch at the car park headed for an afternoon checking nest boxes in a western oak wood on the Breconshire side of the upper Swansea Valley.
