Barn Owl : Goldcliff Lagoons, Newport

On Bank Holiday Monday 3.January 2022 I made a long overdue visit to Goldcliff Lagoons, Newport in the hope of catching up with an afternoon flying Barn Owl which had been attracting a lot of attention over the recent Christmas holiday period.

It's been something like three and a half years since my last visit.

Myself and fellow birder/togger and good friend Dave Gilbert rocked up at about 1.30pm having seen reports that the owl could show anytime after 2.30pm.

It was good to bump into Phillip Leyshon, Paul Denning, Carl Jones and Emma Woodhouse who were familiar faces among the gathered 'paparazzi'.

We waited a couple of hours in the cold and mud and just before we were thinking of calling it a day because of the failing light the bird appeared at 3.45pm and hunted in our vicinity for about 10mins before it disappeared to the far side of the reserve.

The bird was always a little distant and with the failing light it's a case of 'record' shots only.

The dismal light resulted in me shooting at a very high ISO and the below images were all taken at between 10,000 and 12,800 ISO, my new Canon R5 coped admirably whereas my Canon 7D Mk II would have really struggled, considering it was almost dark I was reasonably pleased with the subsequent 'noisy' results.......
