Long Billed Dowitcher, Drift Res, Cornwall. 2nd October

This long stayer was only 20 mins from where Gill and I were staying in Cornwall, so we had to pop along to see it. Lovely, obliging bird. Gill saw it first. I was scanning the far bank, when she pointed out that it was in fact about 30 yards in front of us!

One of my best birds this year. Not his individual, but the one at Goldcliff earlier in the year. I watched it for an hour or so after it arrived at the first pool with a flock of Redshank.

I remember being struck by how samll it was compared to the Redshanks. I'd always assumed Dowitchers were larger.

Saw the Goldcliff bird briefly, having stumbled on a twitch. I'd only popped in to say hello to the first Avocets of the year...
