Crossbills : Garwnant Visitor Centre Nr Merthyr Tydfil

It's been a few years since I visited Garwnant and with plenty of Crossbills showing quite well feeding in the conifers near the car park recently another visit was well overdue.

Myself and good friend Dave Gilbert arranged to meet with old friend Steve Wilce from Bwlch, near Brecon at the car park at 10.30am and we were greeted by a grey overcast sky and patchy drizzle.

Steve and myself have been friends for about 15 years meeting for the first time when myself and Teresa had a static caravan at Llangors Lake, near Brecon.

We enjoyed many days out during our time at Llangors and have kept in touch ever since, top bloke and great birder and photographer.

The forecast however was for the drizzle to clear and for the day to open out with brightness and sunshine for the remainder of the day, the weather duly obliged.

There were good numbers of Crossbills present although they fed high in the trees and were highly mobile.

'Record shots' only I'm afraid as being high in the trees the birds were always distant and the images are huge crops and a tad over sharpened........

We said our goodbyes to Steve mid-afternoon and myself and Dave made our way home via Cefn Cadlan stopping to check for a Great Grey Shrike where one had wintered a few years ago, no luck I'm afraid but a lovely day out never the less.
